The Dreamcatcher came to the Ojibwe (Chippewa) by way of the spider, Iktomi, after learning many of the people were being visited by bad dreams.
He shared with them the sacred knowledge of the makings of an amulet that would hold the power to protect sleeping ones from bad dreams and covert influences of the night.
It is said that when a dreamcatcher hangs above a place of sleep it moves freely in the night air catching dreams as they drift by. Good dreams are allowed to flow through the webbing to bestow themselves upon the dreamer while the bad dreams become hopelessly entangled only burn away with the first rays of the morning sun.
