| Happy New Year to Everyone, We want to take this
time to thank all of you that helped out at the rescue
this past year. We had a banner year with
donations, new incoming birds, volunteers and birds
being adopted to new homes.
It looks like our ending total was 629 residents.
All this says to us is to many birds are being sold to
so many uneducated owners in to many places. The
almighty dollar over rides the point of the sale, and
that is to provide the owner a companion bird as well as
a life long friend. The wrong size cages and improper
foods, plus no details on care and welfare or the nature
of the birds being sold.
We have a great example here with a rescue we took in
last month. A large chain pet store in Atlanta was
selling a baby Lory. His diet was Parakeet seed and
Millet. The lady asked the sales associate why the bird
was being fed that diet and she replied, that is what
the manager told us to feed it. At that instant she
purchased the bird and got it out of the store. Now here
at the rescue on a proper diet he is doing great.
Now I have to ask this question, if they cannot know the
correct diet then how can they know the nature of the
bird, again $$$$$$ is the main goal. Not the welfare of
the bird being sold.
Now for some great news here at the rescue.
We have completed all of the paper work for the
sanctuary side of the rescue and are having plans drawn
for a new area just for the permanent residents. We have
been forced to house adoptable birds and permanent
residents together for lack of completed flight space.
The new 100 foot flight will house a lot of the
permanent residents and the smaller 20 - 40 and 60 foot
flights a lot of the adoptable birds. The wrap around
porch will house the most adoptable birds so that
prospective adopters will have a space to interact with
the birds.
Little did we know that we would grow to the numbers we
have placed here now. We have already added some new
sections to the web site to spell out the rescue end as
well as the sanctuary end of bird placement here at the
rescue. We will also be setting up a new foundation for
the sanctuary end to protect the estate funding portion
for the birds.
Our 12 month interest free building loan has been
reduced to just under $9,000.00 , so it is still looking
good to pay it off by June and still remain interest
free.
Our sponsor a bird program has grown also, so this
allows us to purchase larger amounts of food, pellets
and toys at a better price.
We now finally have our own intern avian vet doing her
internship here at the rescue. She was here over fall
break, she will be back at spring break and then again
all next summer. She was in birdie heaven.
We want to thank all of those who attended the holiday
open houses and enjoyed all the great food.
My words alone cannot thank all of you that have helped
the rescue grow to where we are today, it has been your
dedicated efforts and donations that have made us what
we are today.
Education is the name of the game now. If we can get
the word out, we might just help some poor birds from
being sold to the wrong people. Check the condition of
the birds in your local stores and don't be afraid to
tell them they have a problem if you see one.
Happy New Year to all!
Ron, Tammy and the flock
…it's for the birds!
